We're on the Road to Freedom

One of the big milestones for any young adult is gaining their full driving licence.  It opens up a new world of freedom and independence and takes the burden off of the mini cab company otherwise known as mum and dad.

I saw a statistic the other day that said the number of people being taught how to drive by a friend or family member was declining rapidly.

Why? Well the report said that it is down to people realising that professional driving instructors can help them pass their test more quickly and conveniently.

As you’ve gathered through my previous blogs, I’m passionate about the freedom that good lifestyle financial planning brings to people’s lives regardless of where they are in the life cycle.

In many ways there are parallels between the new learner driver or recently newly passed and someone on their lifestyle financial planning journey.

You could try to do it all yourself and self learn.  But that would be like slapping on the L plates and taking to the road with someone sitting alongside you who holds a full licence saying nothing, but just being there to fulfil the legalities and hoping for the best.

I've seen the same professionally with people saying that they are going to do it themselves.  However, they soon realise that there’s a lot more to it than a few Google searches.  Plus there’s a huge chunk of self discipline needed to succeed this way too.

Working with someone who's there to provide coaching, guidance, motivation and support keeps people on the right road (literally in the driving instructor’s case).

The invaluable experience and know how, especially when you get ‘stuck’ is vital.  That could be while attempting a tricky three point turn when you've never done one before or trying to make sense of a complicated pension arrangement.

Both of my kids passed their driving tests some time ago, so thankfully Caroline and I no longer have to do the delivery and collection service.

So thanks to lifestyle financial planning, we're on the road to what financial freedom means to us.
