Sometimes, when life hands you lemons, you have to make lemonade

An interesting phrase. Which was something that caught my attention some weeks ago.

Where after not having the best World Athletic Championships due to a mystery problem, I heard Dina Asher-Smith say in a post-race interview on the BBC, ‘Sometimes, when life hands you lemons, you have to make lemonade’. Where she ‘vowed to hit back’ and ‘and still feels that she has belief, ahead of next year’s Paris Olympics’.

But what on earth did she mean?

Well, being the age I am I had to look it up. Where Wikipedia tells me that it’s a proverbial phrase. Used to encourage optimism and a positive can-do attitude in the face of adversity or misfortune. Lemons suggest sourness or difficulty. Where making lemonade from what you’ve been given, is turning these into something positive and desirable.

It resonated with me. As we all have issues that need to be resolved from time to time. Perhaps they’re family related. Perhaps they’re personal. Or even perhaps they’re financial. Where some we’re able to fix and some we’re not. But for those that prove a challenge, we may need to explore alternatives. Or even establish a Plan B.

Regardless and as difficult as this may be, we have to take ownership. Accepting that life cannot be rosy, all of the time.

What we must not do is bury our heads in the sand. As all we’re doing as a consequence, is kicking the can down the road.

I like lemonade. Particularly the fresh kind that’s uncarbonated. I hope that you do too.

Remember that life is not a rehearsal, and we only get one crack at it. And although the money is important, it’s what we do with it that really counts.
